Costa Rica's first city was established in 1561 under the name of Ciudad Castillo de Garcimuñoz. The city was located in what we currently know as Santa Ana, a city on the west side of San José with nice weather and a great geographical location. Santa Ana went from being a peasant village, dedicated to onion plantations, to one of the biggest cities with free zones, restaurants, bars, residential areas and hotels.
Santa Ana's mountains are known for their scenery.
Santa Ana conservation area is located closed to the Santa Ana High School; this are has natural, cultural and historical wealth to be explored.
Small ceramic factories with beautiful crafts can be found in Salitral.
The church of Santa Ana was built in 1870 and is now considered national heritage.
Santa Ana's main street has shops with souvenirs, honey, onions and traditional candy.
